When you are invited to share an evening or activity by someone, our first impulse is to bring a hostess gift as a thank you for the invitation. We want to give something that will show our appreciation but also not disrupt the plans that your hostess has made.

Here are some ideas of things that you can give your host/hostess that are different from the bottle of wine or flowers that have become so traditional.

  1. A book - How about a bestseller or a book of a place that your host has talked about. Something for them to enjoy when the evening is over.
  2. Flowers - but not the cut ones that need to be arranged but a potted one for the garden or deck.
  3. Candles - Not tapers that make the host feel they need to be used that day but a candle for relaxation or decoration.
  4. Homemade Jams or Jellies - These homemade items can even be store bought. Think of your host enjoying a treat for their morning toast and coffee the next day and thinking of your generosity.
  5. Liquors - If you must choose alcohol, try a special liquor. There are so many new liquors that are a special indulgence and your host will not feel obliged to open it during that occasion.

Use your imagination and find a gift that is special to that event or that particular host. Your time and attention to details will make you a favoured guest sure to be invited over and over again.

What a great way to  increase your social life but to be on the favoured guest list of all your friends.

Our economy's are in a turbulent time and big changes are happening. No matter what side of the equation you are on, it makes perfect sense to save money wherever you can. This economic set back will not last forever and why we are waiting for the upswing to come, let's have some fun for free.

That's right I said it was possible to have fun for NO MONEY (or very little). It just requires a little thought and creativity and I am here to help you with some ideas.

  1. Board Game Night - grab your old board games and set up them up in different areas and invite alot of people. Move from station to station.
  2. Evening of Cards - remember bridge, euchre or any number of games - an amazing time can be made of up of a pack of cards
  3. Walking tour of your city - Most of us only enjoy our own city when we have company. Grab a camera, a bottle of water and some friends and be a tourist in your own city.
  4. Digital Photography Outing - Grab your camera and some friends and head out to capture whatever theme you choose - maybe buildings, nature or the unusual but have fun and see things from your cameras eyes. Maybe have your groups pictures judged by the kids in your family. Just an idea.
  5. Hike on a nearby hiking trail - Everywhere you look you will find hiking trails or you can create one of your own. Grab a good pair of shoes, some buddies and head off for a couple of hours to see what you see.
  6. Cooking Club - We all eat. Why not get a group together and each cook a different course. Do it at one persons house. Play good music and have a ball. For the price of one meal, you are able to enjoy a 4-6 course meal, depending on how many cooks you have.
  7. Beach Day - Grab your towels and bathing suit and head out to the closest beach and have the day in the sun. Walk, play frizbee or just talk. A group makes this outing a fabulous day.
  8. Fishing with a Bud - pull out that old fishing rod and head to the river. Have some peace and quiet while with a friend or two
  9. Book Club - just finished a book you loved? Get a group together and talk about it
  10. Scavenger Hunt - in your house or in a park
  11. Get all your old records, tapes and cd's together and play "Remember this"

There are so many other ideas that will keep you connected to your family and friends and give yourself a chance to forget about the price of gas or the stock market for a short time. Use the Feast of Friends free organization tools to get everyone together that you know and try some new free fun in your life today.
